トウキョウソナタ

じゅうがつ（October）にムービーナイトにトウキョウソナタのえいがをみにいきました。おもしろくてよかったですね。

October was a century ago, but my feelings toward this movie stay. Part of this movie is surprisingly realistic. It vividly depicts the bitter life of an ordinary family in a society suffering from economic depression. Part of this movie is overly dramatic, but for this reason, the sons, the father, the mother and the burglar get to jump off the screen and strike us with their absurdity and force us to reflect on the roots of these conflicts. And then, all of the drama goes to an end. The family members wrap up their little adventures, return to their home, sit at the same table and share a meal. Now we know, a new day has come, and life goes on.

The movie ends with the son playing Debussy's Clair de Lune.

Jiffy Jam - Masa Sumide

The song is called Jiffy Jam and it was written by the late great Jerry Reed. In this video clip, it is played by the Japanese guitarist Masa Sumide (住出勝則).

わたしのサンクスギビングの休み

わたしのサンクスギビングの休みはおもしろかったです。火曜日から土曜日までとてもひまでよかったです。でも、日曜日と月曜日はとても忙しくてたいへんでした。

水曜日のばんパーチをして、じゅういちじからさんじまでともだちとをたしのへやでえいごのえいがをみました。たのしかったです。木曜日にともだちとシカゴにいきました。ともだちにあって、あさごはんをたべて、デパートにギターにいきました。そして、サウスベンドにきました。金曜日から土曜日までともだちのへやでゆっくりをしました。えいがをみて、おんがくをききました。でも、べんきょしませんでした。

日曜日にしゅくだいをしました。ねませんでした。とてもたいへんでした。

とてもわるいしゅうかん（habit）です。でも、I guess I'll keep doing so...

わたしのへやは　大きいへやです。そして、あかるいです。へやの中に　きれいなまどが　あります。そして、　エアコン（air conditioner）も　あります。エアコンは　まどのしたに　あります。とても　いいです！（サウスベンドは　とても　さむい（cold）です。）でも、すいはんき（rice cooker）
が　ありません。（アメリカ人は　ぜんぜん　こめ（rice）を　たべません。）そして、つくえのとなりに　ふとんが　あります。わたしは　ときどき　ふとんのうえで　ねます。ふとんのうえに　いいえいごのえいがのポスター（poster）
が　あります。（アメリカ人は　よく　えいがを　みます。）ふとんの　となりに　れいぞうこ（fridge）が　あります。（アメリカ人は　よく　すずしいたべもの（cold food？）を　たべます。でも、日本人は　あまり　たべません。）

This song is not strictly Japanese, because it's a fingerstyle guitar song, which means there are no lyrics, but it's written and performed by the talented Japanese guitar virtuoso Masaaki Kishibe.

I think 流れ行く雲 can exemplify the songs that are good because of their simplicity and their ability to say so much with so little. Please enjoy.

Hey. This is Jin's First-Year-Japanese blog.

I, like so many others, first encountered Japan and Japanese through several popular animations like Detective Conan at a very young age. Though somewhat babyish, they were once my best friends and seemed to be an appropriate introduction to a new culture.

Furthermore, I might call myself a movie buff and a big fan of Akira Kurosawa and Takeshi Kitano. I also enjoyed works of Yasujiro Ozu, Shunji Iwai and other great Japanese directors. Understanding their stories in their own language really is an incentive for me to take this class.

And I don't think I have to elaborate on how Japan has been getting the whole world's attention because of its economic growth, aging society, famous etiquette, etc. I want to explore these phenomena, go and live in Japan for a while, and hopefully correct some of my ideas that may be pretty wrong now.

Anyway, I'm glad to be in this class, and I really hope I can post some Japanese here next time.
